Keeping Suriname as “the Greenest Country on Earth”
About

Empowering indigenous communities

Re:wild is working to protect Suriname’s vast and intact rainforests by strengthening Indigenous-led conservation efforts. The initiative focuses on equipping Indigenous guardians with the tools and training needed to monitor and defend their territories against illegal logging, mining, and wildlife trade. By integrating sustainable livelihood programs, the project ensures that conservation efforts benefit both local communities and biodiversity.

motivation
The NTF supports Re:wild’s commitment to keeping Suriname one of the most intact and biodiverse countries on Earth. Indigenous-led conservation is a proven and effective approach to forest protection, and this initiative strengthens those efforts with training, monitoring, and sustainable economic opportunities. By supporting Indigenous guardianship, this project ensures that Suriname remains a global leader in forest conservation.

Pillar & Approaches

Ecosystem Health

Projects in this pillar support the protection and restoration of freshwater, land, and ocean realms, crucial for meeting the '30x30' targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. This ambitious goal seeks to effectively protect and manage 30% of the world’s terrestrial, inland water, and coastal and marine areas by 2030. Achieving this is vital as currently, only about 17% of land and 8% of marine areas are under some form of protection. These efforts are essential to address the intertwined crises of biodiversity loss and climate change, ensuring the survival of natural systems that protect human well-being and support all life on Earth.
