Rare is pioneering a first-of-its-kind Small-Scale Fisheries (SSF) Impact Bond which will enable community-led co-management of fisheries in Southeast Sulawesi. The project will establish five new “Managed Access with Reserves (MA+R)” areas, to be designated as Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs), to protect vital territorial seas that host over 80% of the world’s corals, seagrasses, and mangroves, where protection is often insufficient. The investment will also formalize and strengthen microbusinesses in MA+R sites, boosting sustainable employment and enabling Fisheries Management Bodies (FMBs) to become financially independent. By tying outcomes to measurable conservation impacts, Rare secures private, public and philanthropic funding to ensure long-term sustainability for both the fisheries and the communities that rely on them.
