Future Energy Ventures Approach to Net-Zero

At Future Energy Ventures we are convinced a portfolio approach to solutions is key to mitigating climate change. We need to scale existing climate solutions faster, and we need to support innovation of new solutions at the very earliest stages. The Future Energy Ventures Fund is an SFDR Article 9 Venture Capital fund and invests in climate tech start-ups and scale-ups which already are in the commercialization stage. In addition, the Future Energy Ventures team is committed to reducing its operational footprint, and supported by the Milkywire Climate Transformation Fund, to making contributions to innovative, catalytic climate projects that accelerate progress towards global net-zero goals.

Maximising long-term CO₂ impact

Since 2021, we have been measuring and offsetting our own GHG emissions, and since 2022 we have had in place an internal carbon fee of $100/ton for our Scope 1, 2 and business travel (scope 3), and $10/ton for our remaining scope 3. Instead of offsetting via carbon credits, we have made contributions equal to the internal fee to the Milkywire Climate Transformation Fund. This fund's overall goal is to maximise long-term CO2 reduction or removal per dollar spent. We are moving beyond offsetting because we believe our carbon compensation should be about more than our own “neutrality”, and rather aimed at creating maximum such positive impact. Our hope is that this donation will contribute far beyond the Future Energy Ventures footprint.

Planeteers

Germany

Planeteers’ engineered enhanced weathering (eEW) system captures CO₂ from both biogenic and anthropogenic flue gases and converts it into ocean-stable bicarbonates. Deploying at wastewater plants (for carbon removal) and in hard-to-abate industries (for decarbonization), their approach utilizes waste minerals, and is designed for modularity, scalability, cost-effectiveness, and rigorous environmental monitoring.

Beyond Zero Emissions

Australia

Beyond Zero Emissions (BZE) is an independent think-tank working on net zero pathways for Australia, highlighting how the green transition benefits the economy. The CTF provides core support to BZE to strengthen its organisational capacity, research, and advocacy work.

Indonesia

Planète Urgence is a non-profit organisation dedicated to environmental conservation and community development, with a notable presence in Indonesia. Their work spans various critical areas, including the restoration of mangroves and coastal trees, fostering sustainable aquaculture practices, and enhancing the economic well-being of local communities. The supported project is specifically tailored to combat the ecological harm caused by shrimp farming and deforestation in the fragile ecosystems of Borneo's Mahakam Delta and Adang Bay. This multifaceted initiative includes essential components such as environmental education, the establishment of community mangrove nurseries, and the provision of training in sustainable aquaculture practices. Through these concerted efforts, Planète Urgence aims to not only mitigate the environmental damage but also empower the local communities to adopt more sustainable livelihood practices.
