AI for Climate Resilience Program

Empowering communities on the frontlines of climate change

AI for the communities climate change hits hardest

As an AI-first company, Klarna is backing local innovators leveraging AI to boost communities on the frontlines of climate change. Launched with Milkywire in January 2026, the AI for Climate Resilience Program funds and mentors local innovators in lower- and middle-income countries as they build practical AI tools for adaptation and resilience — from early-warning systems to resource management. Beyond funding, participants receive tailored support build robust solutions and scale their impact.

Real impact happens when ideas meet action. These projects harness the power of AI for climate resilience and adaptation, turning innovation into practical solutions that help communities prepare for and respond to a changing climate. From building disaster resilience and protecting biodiversity to securing vital resources like water and food, they empower those on the frontlines to adapt and thrive.

Cohort 1

Started January 2026

India

Acres of Ice

Project goal

Expand the model into two new countries, Nepal and Kyrgyzstan, providing more than 200 households with more reliable spring irrigation water and testing how the approach can work in different mountain environments.

Funding

USD 111,000

India

SEWA / IFPRI / Gram Vaani

Project goal

Reach more than 50,000 women across 22 districts with locally relevant climate advice, helping them prepare for climate shocks, protect their health and livelihoods, and improve access to finance.

Funding

USD 287,000

India

Acres of Ice

Acres of Ice works to improve water security for mountain communities that depend on glacial melt for farming and daily life. As glaciers retreat, water shortages during the spring growing season threaten harvests, household incomes, and communities’ ability to remain in their villages. Building on its work in the Indian Himalayas, the project is preparing to expand into Nepal and Kyrgyzstan.

AI-usecase

Acres of Ice builds artificial ice reservoirs that store excess winter water and release it for irrigation in spring. AI is used to estimate how much ice is stored using images from low-cost cameras. The project will also use AI to identify suitable locations for new reservoirs and automate operations, helping communities manage seasonal water supplies with fewer manual checks.

Expand the model into two new countries, Nepal and Kyrgyzstan, providing more than 200 households with more reliable spring irrigation water and testing how the approach can work in different mountain environments.

SEWA / IFPRI / Gram Vaani

Rural women workers in India face increasing threats from extreme heat, floods, and unpredictable weather. These conditions affect their health, income, and ability to work, yet general weather alerts often offer little guidance for their daily decisions. SEWA, IFPRI, and Gram Vaani are working together to make climate information more relevant and accessible to the women who need it.

AI-usecase

AI combines weather data with trusted human feedback loops to deliver practical advice in local languages through WhatsApp. Rather than simply reporting the forecast, the system helps women understand what changing conditions mean for their work and health. The aim is to support decisions that reduce risks, protect livelihoods, and provide financial opportunities for women to prepare for climate shocks.

Project goal

Reach more than 50,000 women across 22 districts with locally relevant climate advice, helping them prepare for climate shocks, protect their health and livelihoods, and improve access to finance.

Funding

USD 287,000

Indonesia

Saka Warga

Project goal

Test the coach in seven pilot villages and train 150 volunteers. Work toward integrating it into disaster-preparedness systems such as the Indonesian Red Cross, while using AtmaGO, a platform with over 16 million users, to encourage wider community participation and share preparedness knowledge.

Funding

USD 275,000

Brazil

GainForest

Project goal

Support at least 10 local communities to collect, store, and own more than 10,000 biodiversity observations and audio recordings. Use AI to classify and map this data, supporting thousands of impact certifications that can help attract conservation funding.

Funding

USD 285,000

Nigeria

GeoTek Water Solutions Ltd

Project goal

Drill 5 new wells and deploy 50 sensors across existing and newly constructed drinking-water facilities. Use the resulting data to improve monitoring, automate and improve the sustainability of water provision infrastructure, and guide well-drilling decisions for communities vulnerable to climate impacts.

Funding

USD 210,000

India

SEEDS

Project goal

Demonstrate a model for disaster support that can be expanded to other communities by enrolling 50,000 households across five districts in three Indian states. Each household will have an e-wallet linked to eligible benefits.

Funding

USD 275,000

Cohort 2

Start: January 2027

India

Humble Bee

Project goal

Enroll 10,000 women on the BEEKIND app, aiming to increase their seasonal income by around 30% and support reliable pollination across approximately 125,000 acres of farmland.

Funding

USD 289,000

Tanzania

MUHAS

Project goal

Support 2,000 mothers and 60 health workers across six hospitals. Aim to contact enrolled mothers in flood-affected areas within two hours of a warning and reduce delayed care-seeking by 25%.

Funding

USD 295,000

South Africa

Wattzo

Project goal

Reduce heatwave forecast error by 15% and install 15–25 solar systems across three to five high-risk communities to evidence how resilience can be provided to those most vulnerable to changing climate. Aim for 15 municipalities, NGOs, or funders to use the vulnerability map, with at least one municipality incorporating it into disaster planning.

Funding

USD 294,180

Madagascar

Madagascar National Parks

Project goal

Deliver SMS forecasts to approximately 250 farmers across 30 villages and engage at least 12 community groups. Aim to reduce temperature forecast error from more than 5°C to less than 3°C and launch a drought forecast covering Madagascar’s national parks

Funding

USD 226,946

Ethiopia

AfriScout

Project goal

Enable a majority of AfriScout’s more than 70 community grazing groups to use the chat tool for planning, and all groups to receive voice guidance. Aim for women to make up at least 40% of users, and evaluate effects on grazing-plan adherence and overgrazing.

Fundint

USD 248,436

India

Foundation for Ecological Security

Project goal

Expand support from 1,000 to 10,000 villages, increase restoration plans from 500 to 5,000, and grow the network of local stewards from 200 to 2,000. Create a platform connecting these stewards directly with corporate and philanthropic funders.
